Teacher BioMs. Enriquez
August 30, 2016
Dear Class, I'm excited to be your reading teacher this year! I think it’s important that you know some things about me as a person so that you can better understand me as a teacher. My name is Laura Christina Enriquez. While most of my friends and family call me ‘Laws’ (a nickname I picked up along the way), in school you can call me Ms. Enriquez. I come from a rather large, Mexican family: a mom and dad, three older sisters, one younger brother, one brother-in-law, and most recently, a niece! Coming from a big family can be overwhelming at times, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I love each one of them infinitely. I am sure you will all get to know a sense of who they are, since I have TONS of stories about them! I am very new to the Boston area, having just moved here last August, but I am really excited to get to know this unique region and culture. I am originally from a small town in Illinois named Riverside, which is about 20 minutes outside of Chicago. I really enjoyed growing up in a small town. It allowed me to ride my bike everywhere, get to know almost everyone in my town, and have great pride for a small community. Outside of school, I have a wide variety of interests and hobbies. I am a huge sports fan! I root for the Chicago Blackhawks, Cubs, and Bears, although I am learning to love the New England teams too. I used to play softball, and even coach BCCS’s high school team. Apart from sports, I love food- whether it is trying new things, exploring new cultures through food, or cooking! My favorite cuisine is Mexican, since that is what I grew up eating. I love to bake too, especially when I am stressed out. I enjoy reading books because you can travel without ever leaving your chair and you get a sneak peek into people's lives. Sometimes when I'm reading, I like to play "psychologist" and try to get into the characters’ heads. Are you like that with books? Or with your friends? I also love how newspaper and magazine articles teach me about the world. My favorite magazine is National Geographic, which I read every month. Some of my favorite books include The Catcher and the Rye, The Great Gatsby, and The Canterbury Tales. I have my Master’s Degree in Education, and absolutely love being a teacher. I have taught many different subjects throughout my career including English composition, English literature, and Debate. I have taught kids at both a middle school and high school level, and especially enjoy the quirkiness of 7th graders. I am really looking forward to working with the students of BCCS, because I have heard wonderful things about how the students are high achievers and love a good challenge- this excites me! We are going to learn a lot this year, and I promise to push you every day to be the best student you can be. This will mean completing all of your assignments and working with one another. We will all be superstars in this classroom, but only if we support one another to truly be the best we can be. I, for one, don’t want to let you down. Welcome to my classroom—I am thrilled to be your teacher. Sincerely, Ms. Enriquez |

Dear Students,
My name is William Jacob Cotto, but most people call me Jake. In school, students usually call me Mr. Cotto, but you may also hear students call me Mr. AvaCotto! I’m okay with you calling me either. I am a Student Support teacher in Reading, Writing and History. I’m here to support you and to help you be successful.
I have lived in Dorchester my entire life. That’s 25 years now! Woah. I am Puerto Rican and Irish; my mom’s family is from Ireland and my dad’s is from Puerto Rico. I have a half-sister on my dad’s side named Jessica. She just moved to Atlanta to go to college at Clark Atlanta University. I’m excited to support her on her journey toward becoming a doctor.
Speaking of college, I graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 2014. At Northeastern, I was able to work briefly for a book publishing company, but decided I didn’t like it as much as I enjoyed actually reading books. During the summer, I go to graduate school at Bread Loaf School of English where I read books and hang out in nature. My absolute favorite books are the Harry Potter series, The Little Prince, and The Things They Carried. Bread Loaf School of English is one of my favorite places because it is relaxing and I can read all day!
Aside from reading books and going to school, I very much like to play sports, spend time outside and enjoy the company of friends and family. In the winter, I love to snowboard and in the spring, I slackline. Slacklines are like tight ropes, but they are really close to the ground, so if I fall I won’t get hurt. I also really enjoy playing basketball during any season!
Many of you might be wondering what Student Support actually means, and how it may affect you. Well, it means that I will be your co-teacher and will be supporting you along with Ms. Enriquez in the best ways that we can. We are here to make sure that the way we teach you is the best way for you to learn. We want you to feel free to tell us when something is working or not working for you, if you’re ever struggling, confused or even really excited about what you’re learning!
We also want you to know that we are all on the same team. You want to be successful. Ms. Enriquez and I want you to be successful. We’re here to help you find success. We have high expectations for you, but we know you can do it because we will be supporting you the whole way. We can’t do the work for you. We need to work together.
Get ready for a great year!
